Shopify announced on October 13, 2026, that it is opening its catalog of more than one billion product listings to a wider range of AI agents. The move lets configured agents search products, build carts and complete purchases on behalf of users across both Shopify and non-Shopify stores.

The expansion removes the previous restriction to partner-specific agents such as Meta’s Muse. Any developer can now connect an agent through the public Shop MCP endpoint at mcp.shop.com.

Shopify AI agents use Shop MCP for search and checkout

The Shop MCP connection supplies 17 tools that agents can call without an API key. These include search_catalog, lookup_catalog and get_product for discovery, plus sign-in with Shop, cart management and Shop Pay checkout for signed-in users. Order data flows directly into merchants’ Shopify admin panels.

Buyers retain final approval on every purchase by default. Agents can also follow user-defined rules such as budget caps or shipping-speed preferences. In some configurations, merchants may allow agents to complete transactions within preset spending limits without step-by-step confirmation.

For stores outside the Shopify platform, agents receive single-use card details after the buyer approves the order inside the Shop app. Existing Catalog API integrations remain unchanged and continue to operate alongside the new MCP channel.

Agentic commerce builds on earlier partnerships and protocols

The October update extends work begun with the September 2026 Meta Muse integration and the launch of Agentic Storefronts that connect to ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify also introduced the Agentic plan, which lets non-Shopify brands add products to the shared catalog, and co-developed the Universal Commerce Protocol with Google.

The catalog already covers millions of merchants and billions of items. Structured data and large-language-model processing make product information readable to AI systems. Agents can handle discovery, reordering, order tracking and return-status checks in addition to initial purchases.

Developers have begun testing agents such as OpenClaw and Hermes against the new endpoint. Shopify expects continued auto-enrollment of merchants into agentic channels and further growth in AI-driven traffic, following earlier conversion improvements observed in pilot programs.

Buyer safeguards and next steps for developers

Shopify keeps the sign-off with the human buyer while giving agents clear rules and limited permissions. Preferences stored in a Shop account travel with the user across different agents, reducing repeated setup steps.

Merchants see every order in their existing dashboard regardless of whether it originated from an agent or a direct visit. No changes to pricing, inventory or fulfillment flows are required.

Shopify has published the skill description at mcp.shop.com/skill.md and encourages developers to test the 17 tools in sandbox environments before connecting live agents. Wider adoption is expected as more third-party agents integrate the protocol over the coming months.

Frequently asked questions

How do Shopify AI agents access the catalog?

Agents connect through the public Shop MCP endpoint at mcp.shop.com, which provides 17 tools for search, cart and checkout without requiring an API key.

Do buyers still approve purchases made by agents?

Yes. Default settings require buyer approval for each transaction, though users can set budget limits or other rules that allow agents to complete orders within those bounds.

Which stores are included in the one billion listings?

The catalog covers millions of Shopify merchants plus non-Shopify brands that have joined the Agentic plan, spanning both storefronts and off-platform listings.

What happens to existing Catalog API integrations?

They continue to function without changes. The new MCP connection operates in parallel and does not replace prior integrations.
